Australian Crypto Exchange Fee Index

How much does it really cost to trade on an Australian crypto exchange? We took the standard trading fee from every exchange in our reviews and worked out the average — plus the cheapest and most expensive — so you can see where the market actually sits. Data as of 31 July 2026.

The Fee Index $3.79 average cost to trade $1,000 (0.38% avg fee)
Median fee 0.30% $3.00 per $1,000
Cheapest 0.05% MEXC · $0.50
Most expensive 0.85% Coinstash · $8.50

Across 14 AUSTRAC-registered exchanges, the standard market (taker) fee averages 0.38% — roughly $3.79 on a $1,000 trade. 7 of the 14 charge 0.10% or less, and the most expensive charges about 17× the cheapest. Every exchange in the table offers free AUD deposits via PayID or bank transfer, so the trading fee below is the main cost that varies.

What this means for you

On a typical $1,000 buy, the difference between the cheapest and most expensive exchange in our data is about $8.00 in trading fees alone. On larger or more frequent trades that gap compounds quickly, which is why fees are one of the eight pillars in our Trust Score. If low cost is your priority, start with our lowest-fee ranking, and use the fee calculator to model your own trade size.

One important caveat: the trading fee isn't the only cost. The spread — the gap between an exchange's buy and sell price — can add more than the fee itself, especially on beginner "instant buy" flows, and it varies too much to publish a single reliable figure. Treat this index as a like-for-like comparison of advertised trading fees, then check the live spread on the exchange before you trade. Our guide to fees and spreads explains how to read the full cost.

Methodology

The index is the simple average of the standard market (taker) trading fee recorded in each published exchange review on this site, covering 14 AUSTRAC-registered exchanges available to Australians. "Cost to trade $1,000" applies that percentage to a single $1,000 market order.

It excludes spread (which varies and isn't uniformly disclosed), deposit fees (every exchange here offers free AUD deposits via PayID or bank transfer), and withdrawal or blockchain network fees. Percentage-based "instant buy" convenience fees are shown separately in the table where an exchange charges one. Figures reflect the fee data in our reviews as of 31 July 2026 and can change — always confirm current rates with the exchange.
