Bitcoin Dominance (Live)

Bitcoin dominance is the share of the entire crypto market's value that sits in Bitcoin. It's one of the most-watched signals for reading whether money is flowing toward Bitcoin or out into altcoins.

What Bitcoin dominance tells you

Dominance is simply Bitcoin's market capitalisation divided by the total market cap of all cryptocurrencies, shown as a percentage. When it rises, Bitcoin is outperforming the rest of the market — often a sign of caution, as investors rotate into the "safest" crypto during uncertainty. When it falls, money is flowing into altcoins, which traders sometimes call "alt season."

Rising vs falling

Rising dominance can mean Bitcoin is leading a rally, or that altcoins are falling faster than Bitcoin in a downturn — so context matters. Falling dominance usually reflects growing appetite for riskier altcoins, which tends to happen later in a bull market when confidence is high. Neither is inherently bullish or bearish on its own.

How to use it

Dominance is a helpful backdrop, not a signal to act on by itself. Pair it with the overall market trend and the Fear & Greed Index to gauge sentiment. And whatever the market is doing, keeping your coins off exchanges matters — see our hardware wallet rankings and security checklist.
