What is the best crypto exchange in Australia?
On our independent 8-pillar Trust Score™, Independent Reserve currently ranks highest at 8.1/10 — but the "best" exchange depends on what you need, whether that's the lowest fees, the easiest experience for beginners, or SMSF support. See our full ranking, or use the 60-second finder to match yourself to one.
Is cryptocurrency legal in Australia?
Yes — buying, holding and trading crypto is legal in Australia. Exchanges that offer AUD must register with AUSTRAC and follow anti-money-laundering rules. Crypto is legal to use but is not legal tender, so no business is obliged to accept it.
Do I have to pay tax on crypto in Australia?
Generally yes. The ATO treats crypto as a capital gains tax (CGT) asset for most investors, so selling, swapping or spending it is a taxable event, and rewards like staking and airdrops are treated as income. If you hold an asset for more than 12 months you may get a 50% CGT discount. You can estimate what you might owe with our free crypto tax calculator.
What is the safest way to store crypto?
For anything beyond a small amount you are actively trading, a self-custody hardware (cold) wallet is the safest option — it keeps your private keys offline, away from hackers and exchange failures. The one rule: protect your recovery phrase and never share it. See our wallet reviews for the best options.
Does an AUSTRAC-registered exchange mean my money is safe?
AUSTRAC registration is a legal requirement and a baseline trust signal, but it covers financial crime (anti-money-laundering) — not consumer protection. It does not guarantee your funds if an exchange is hacked or collapses, and crypto is not covered by any government guarantee. That is why we weight security and regulation heavily in our Trust Score.
How do I choose a crypto exchange?
Look beyond the headline fee to the spread, plus security and track record, AUSTRAC registration, the coins on offer and free AUD deposit methods like PayID. Our Trust Score scores every exchange on the same eight pillars, and the finder narrows it down to a shortlist in about a minute.
