Overview
Binance is the world’s largest crypto exchange by volume, serving Australians through the AUSTRAC-registered entity Investbybit Pty Ltd (trading as Binance Australia). It offers deep liquidity, a huge range of assets and very low spot fees — but its Australian history is complicated, and it is currently under regulatory scrutiny. Its Trust Score™ of 6.5 reflects that trade-off: excellent trading economics, weak local regulatory standing.
Regulatory status (read this first)
Three things Australian users should know. In April 2023, ASIC cancelled the AFS licence of Binance’s Australian derivatives arm, ending regulated derivatives for local retail clients. Around the same time, its AUD bank-transfer and PayID services were cut off when its payments provider withdrew. Those AUD services were restored in January 2026 via a new payments partner. However, in August 2025 AUSTRAC ordered Binance Australia to undergo an external AML/CTF audit, citing compliance deficiencies — that process is ongoing. We’ve set its status to “regulatory changes” for this reason.
Security
Binance operates large-scale security infrastructure, maintains the SAFU emergency fund, and publishes a proof-of-reserves system. For balance: in 2019 it suffered a hot-wallet hack of about US$40 million, which it covered from SAFU with no direct user losses. Two-factor authentication is supported. It does not offer conventional customer-fund insurance beyond the SAFU fund.
Fees, coins & features
Spot fees are around 0.1% — among the most competitive available — with roughly 350+ assets and Binance Earn products. Its NFT marketplace has been largely wound down. The platform is powerful but complex, aimed at more experienced users.
Verdict — who should use it
Binance suits experienced, cost-focused traders who want the deepest liquidity and lowest spot fees and who understand the regulatory picture.
It is less suited to beginners, to anyone who wants regulated derivatives locally, or to users who prioritise strong Australian regulatory standing — given the ongoing AUSTRAC audit, this warrants genuine caution.
